“Bryan, come here quick. Something is happening on TV!” My wife called to me just as I was getting ready for the day. I walked into the living room and I could not believe what was happening before my eyes. We started out watching the reports of highjacked planes and then it turned much, much worse. It is still a day I will never forget.
Now, years later as we remember that day, we must not forget what was really taking place… a cover-up! In essence, what took place on that dark day in American history, was not a clash of two separate and competing ideologies, although it was, it was not a battle between a sovereign nation and a terrorist group, although it was, and it was not the coverup that Charlie Sheen and others purport it was, it was much, much more!
What did happen on that dark day in September 2001 was the unveiling the latest in a long line of dark and sinister plots orchestrated by the leader of the unfree world… the ruler of the principalities of the air… the god of this age… the enemy of the soul of man… the devil himself in the cover-up of the ages.
What Satan would like for us to think today is that we live in a world where our true enemies have flesh and blood.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:12
The great deceiver does not even care if we mourn, in fact he himself would like to “comfort” us like he wanted to “comfort” Jesus (Matt 4:1-11). But his comfort always leaves us wanting more. More blood, more self vindication, more political prowess against those whom we think are the enemy, more morality, more good works and more temporary solutions to eternal problems.
So what is this cover-up? The cover-up is that as men fight against one another for the things of this world, Satan is fighting against us for things of the next. We are engaging in temporary warfare while Satan engages in the eternal. We are in an age between two ages. And it is an age that will not last forever… but leads to one that will.
The cover-up blinds us…
3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

The cover-up confuses us…
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
Ephesians 6:11
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8
The cover-up distracts and depresses us…
16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. 17 For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
The cover-up ultimately damns us…
17 If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. 18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Romans 5:17-19
On a day when rememberance of those who lost their lives is of utmost importance to Americans, we cannot forget the fact that the eternal destinies of 2993 people were sealed that day as well. 2993 human beings created in the image of God, created to walk and talk with God, created to serve in His Kingdom, entered into an eternity that perhaps some, if not many, were ill prepared for. That is the true cover-up… that eternity could be a moment away.
Are you ready? Are you convinced that these tragedies of our time are really the outworkings of Satan and sin in a fallen world? As we remember 9-11-01 today may we remember that the cover-up continues and that men and women/boys and girls are entering moment by moment into an eternity that Satan does not want them to know about. An eternity that could be covered up under the blood of Christ!
