Confirming our Calling in Christ: An Unexpected Aspect of Biblical Fellowship

When one considers how fellowship impacts the life of the believer he or she may begin to think about warm gatherings in homes with coffee and conversation. Perhaps memories surface of powerful moments where passages were explained in a way that gripped the heart and inspired a commitment to personal change. Or maybe fellowship looked like hearts being poured out in prayer. Whatever the case, sharing in Biblical community is part of God’s plan for our growth and His glory.

Recently, it was my privilege to preach from 2 Peter 1:1-15 during a weekend at my church focused on small groups. In this passage, one unexpected phrase caught my attention.

“Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble” v. 10 (emphasis mine)

Through the years I have studied countless passages on fellowship, lead countless small group studies (even writing a few myself), preached on fellowship, read books on fellowship…and well everything in between. However, I never had comes across this phrase and the Holy Spirit’s apparent intention for us to connect God’s calling to our “effort” and “practice” of our faith. In fact, the implication is that our assurance and perseverance in Christ are tied together with living out our faith through fellowship. Mind-Blown!

I hope you enjoy this video, and I hope the Lord uses it to reaffirm your commitment fellowship with believers in your local church.
